Mastering the Starfield Character Builder: A Guide to Biometric IDs, Traits and More

Discover the exciting world of character creation in Starfield and unleash your imagination like never before. Thanks to the innovative approach taken by Bethesda, designing diverse and highly detailed characters has never been easier. Felipe Nogueira, the lead tech artist at Bethesda, shared in the latest Starfield Direct how the character generation system was completely revamped. By incorporating a wide range of faces from different age groups and ethnicities, players now have the power to create truly unique and diverse characters.

Unlike Bethesda’s previous RPG games, Starfield introduces a character creation system that pushes the boundaries of customization. This means that you can expect a greater variety of NPCs throughout the space game. In addition to designing your character’s appearance, you must also consider their traits to give them a distinct personality and set of skills. Prepare to dive into the depths of the Starfield character creation system and unleash your creative potential.

Once you complete the Starfield tutorial quest, your character becomes involved in an accident and loses their memory. Two recruits from the Argos Extractors will ask you to confirm your identity using a record locator. This is the starting point for the character creation process.

Biometric ID

The Biometric ID provides players with a base model to build upon. Each model is assigned a personnel record number, and you have 40 presets to choose from. It’s worth noting that the Biometric ID also mimics the appearance of a gel electrophoresis band, which is used to read DNA. If you wish to change your Starfield appearance or Biometric ID later on, you can easily do so by visiting a Genetics facility.

Body

Take control of your character’s physique with the body customization options available in Starfield. Using a circular grid system, you can fine-tune your ideal body by adjusting three key areas: muscular, heavy, and thin. With over 100 different choices available, you can strike the perfect balance for your character. Additionally, there are three additional modifiers that allow you to adjust body type, walk style, and skin tone. If you ever feel like changing your character’s appearance, places like Enhance in New Atlantis offer the perfect setting to do so.

Face

Unleash your creativity and sculpt the perfect face for your character in Starfield. The face section offers a wide array of options to alter your character’s appearance. From skin tone, head shapes, and hair, to facial hair, eye color, and jewelry, you have numerous choices to experiment with. Let your character’s personality shine through as you customize their features, including their nose, ears, mouth, and more. Express yourself to the fullest with the dermaesthetic options available to add that extra touch of personalization.

Choose your Background

Your character’s background in the game not only defines their starting skills but also grants access to exclusive dialogue options. These unique choices can prove useful at unexpected moments, as the game prompts you when they can be used. For instance, if you encounter an NPC seeking a beast hunter, having the corresponding background will unlock a special quest chain, allowing you to delve deeper into the conversation.

Each background offers its own advantages. The Chef background, for example, grants access to Starfield research projects beforehand, and may even introduce new actions related to Starfield food. Select your Traits

While some choices in character creation are optional, traits offer a chance to further personalize your character. You have the option to select up to three traits, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. It’s important to note that certain traits cannot be combined. For example, you cannot choose both the introvert and extrovert traits. Similarly, aligning with one religion prevents you from enjoying the perks of other Starfield religions. Consult our dedicated guide to discover the best Starfield traits.

Now armed with the knowledge of the character creation system, explore our Starfield factions guide to determine which organization appeals most to you. However, be aware that, as we mentioned in our Starfield review, some aspects of character creation may leave you wanting more.
