Mastering Starfield on Steam Deck: Optimal Settings and Strategies

Is Starfield Compatible with Steam Deck?

Are you wondering if you can play Starfield, the Bethesda RPG, on your Steam Deck? The answer is yes, but with some performance issues to consider. While Valve’s handheld PC can run the game, it hasn’t been officially verified by Valve yet.

In terms of storage requirements, Starfield takes up a substantial 125GB of space due to its expansive world with over a hundred different solar systems to explore. If you plan on playing this game on the go, especially with the 64GB model of Steam Deck, you may want to consider investing in the best microSD card for additional storage.

Although the Steam page for Starfield does not provide information on how it runs on the Steam Deck, our own findings suggest that you can play the game on the handheld device. However, it may require adjustments to the in-game settings to ensure optimal performance.

Leaked patch notes indicate that Bethesda plans to add virtual keyboard support for Steam Deck to Starfield. This addition is often part of the process to obtain a Steam Deck Verified rating from Valve, as virtual keyboard support is one of their requirements.

Based on our own experiences, we recommend adjusting the settings when playing Starfield on the Steam Deck. The game may not be fully optimized post-launch, so tweaking the resolution scaling and turning on AMD FSR2 can improve the gameplay experience. Although playing with the lowest in-game settings is not ideal, it can help make the game playable on the handheld device.

However, even with these settings, you may still experience frame drops below 20fps. Additionally, the battery life while playing Starfield on the Steam Deck is limited, providing only about 1.30 to 1.45 hours of gameplay. For the best experience, it’s currently recommended to play Starfield on a gaming PC until Bethesda can further optimize the game for portable devices.
