Unraveling the TAV BG3: An In-Depth Look into Madison Benson’s Intricate Creation

In Baldur’s Gate 3, when creating a character, you have the option to either choose one of the seven Origin characters or create a custom character. If you go with the latter option, you’ll notice that the default name in the name box is “Tav”. But why is that? Let’s delve into who Tav is in Baldur’s Gate 3.

Tav is the default name given to a custom character that is not one of the predefined Origin characters. Although you can change the name to anything you prefer, if you leave it as Tav, your character will be named “Tav”. The name itself is a reference to the original game title of Baldur’s Gate 3, which was Project Gustav.

The origin of Project Gustav can be traced back to a 2018 Divinity: Original Sin documentary, where the founder of Larian Studios, Swen Vincke, mentioned the project at the end of the video. The project was named after Vincke’s dog, Gustav, similar to how Larian Studios itself was named after his other dog, Pilar.

Exploring the game files of Baldur’s Gate 3, you’ll find multiple .pak files with the name Gustav, such as Gustav_Video.pak, Gustav_Textures.pak, and simply Gustav.pak. Additionally, if you load into a multiplayer campaign, you’ll notice the name Gustav.

Ultimately, Tav serves as the default name for your single-player custom character, while Gustav represents the multiplayer counterpart. However, the choice of these names does not impact gameplay or how other characters interact with you.

Baldur’s Gate 3 is available on PC, Mac, PlayStation 5, and soon on Xbox Series X|S. If you want to learn more about the game, be sure to check out our article on how to get the Potent Robe in BG3, or browse through our growing collection of articles by clicking the game tag below!
