Efrin, a non-playable character in Baldur’s Gate 3, can be found in the Overgrown Tunnel. However, he is petrified and trapped by Aunt Ethel, making him unable to interact with the player. To save him from this unfortunate state, players have the option to depetrify him, albeit resulting in his death.
If players wish to ensure Efrin’s survival, they can choose to defeat Aunt Ethel first and then depetrify him. Once saved, Efrin can provide assistance with quests and offer valuable information as a helpful companion throughout the game.
Efrin’s Stats
Efrin, the dwarf, possesses the following statistics:
- Weight: 50kg
- Base speed: 6m
- Health: 27
- Armor: 15
- Dexterity: 12
- Charisma: 10
- Wisdom: 10
- Intelligence: 10
- Constitution: 12
- Strength: 14
- Passive Ability: Attack of Opportunity
Efrin’s statistics indicate that he is an average dwarf, neither particularly strong nor agile. His intelligence, wisdom, and personality traits are all neutral. While his stats may not be crucial for combat scenarios, they can greatly enhance the roleplaying experience of players who choose to undo his petrification.
Efrin’s loot in Baldur’s Gate 3 may not be significant, but it provides a helpful boost for players starting the game. The loot includes 3 gold coins, scale mail, a greataxe, and a bottle.
Location
Discovering the Overgrown Tunnel in the Sunlit Wetlands through the Riverside Teahouse is an exciting adventure in itself. But if you’re wondering how to save Efrin and unravel the mysteries surrounding his ailment, we’ve got you covered.
How to Save Efrin
Initially, it may seem like Efrin is afflicted with Laduger’s Bite, a dreadful disease. However, it is later revealed that Aunt Eithel is the one responsible for petrifying him, making it appear as if he contracted the disease. Thankfully, there are two ways to save Efrin: by using Basilisk oil or by confronting and eliminating Aunt Ethel.
Using Basilisk Oil
The most straightforward method to rescue Efrin in Baldur’s Gate 3 is by utilizing Basilisk oil. This valuable substance can be found inside a chest located in the gallery of the Overgrown Tunnel. Once obtained, locate Efrin and carefully apply the Basilisk oil to break the petrification curse.
However, be prepared for an unforeseen consequence. Once released from petrification, Efrin will question your decision and inform you that his petrified state had actually halted the spread of Laduger’s Bite. Sadly, after a short period of agony, Efrin will succumb to the disease and pass away.
Although this option grants Efrin release from the pain of Laduger’s Bite, it denies him the chance to bid farewell to his family. It’s a bittersweet ending, where you provide him a peaceful death but forego his final moments with loved ones. Alternatively, you can choose to leave Efrin in his petrified state, sparing him from the agony of the disease, but at the cost of never reuniting him with his family.
Eliminating Aunt Ethel
Meet Aunt Ethel, the Hag and notorious antagonist in Baldur’s Gate 3. Initially, she appears as a charming elderly lady when encountered at the Druid Grove, but as the story unfolds, her wicked nature becomes evident.
In order to save Efrin from petrification while keeping him alive, you must first defeat Aunt Ethel. She is a formidable boss with exceptional stats:
Charisma | 18 | ||
Dexterity | 14 | ||
Intelligence | 13 | ||
Wisdom | 14 | ||
Constitution | 16 | ||
Strength | 18 | ||
Passive Abilities | Attack of Opportunity, Darkvision, and Fey Life |
- Attack of Opportunity: When an enemy moves away from you, you can react by attacking them without using your regular turn.
- Darkvision: Provides the ability to see up to 12 meters in the dark.
- Fey Life: Wearing this grants an increased chance of success on Death Saving Throws.
During the confrontation with Aunt Ethel in her lair, she creates three illusions of herself, while one is the real Hag. Take caution, as these illusions can still harm you. To reveal the true Hag, you need to dispel the illusions by attacking them.
To effectively combat her, it’s recommended to have the Magic Missile Spell. This spell fires three missiles, ensuring consistent hits on your target. With this, you can damage all three copies of the Hag simultaneously and unveil the real one.
Once you’ve depleted half of her HP, Ethel will clone herself again. You can employ the same strategy as before or use area-of-effect (AoE) attacks like Burning Hands or Pin Down. Attacking the clones will expose her true location.
Another viable tactic is utilizing the Witch Bolt spell. This spell establishes a connection between you and your desired target. By doing so, you can focus your attacks on the real Hag, preventing wasted efforts on the clones.
After successfully defeating Aunt Ethel, you can search her body for valuable loot such as Corellon’s Grace, Spellthief, and 3 Potions of Hill Giant Strength, along with other rewarding items.
Furthermore, triumphing over the Hag will eliminate all her curses, including Laduger’s Bite curse on Efrin. As a result, you can safely depetrify Efrin without the risk of his demise. Grateful, Efrin will express his gratitude and depart to reunite with his family.
Meet Efrin, a compassionate character with a heart of gold who is always willing to lend a helping hand. Whether you need assistance with quests, valuable information, or simply some company, Efrin is there for you. However, it’s worth noting that Efrin’s combat skills may not be the strongest, so it’s advisable to team up with other companions who excel in fighting.
One of Efrin’s standout qualities is his extensive knowledge about various locations and characters in the game, such as the Sunlit Wetlands, the Overgrown Tunnel, Auntie Ethel, and her lair. This knowledge proves especially valuable during quests or explorations. In fact, Efrin can even guide you to find the elusive Tears of Selune.
That said, should you choose to let Efrin perish, you can claim his valuable loot. For players in the early stages of the game, scale mail is an excellent choice for armor – both protective and lightweight, allowing for agile movement. Additionally, the great axe is a formidable weapon, dealing significant damage upon impact.
Ultimately, the decision regarding Efrin’s fate rests solely in your hands. You can choose to bring him back from petrification and let him meet an untimely demise, or you can wait until the Hag’s death and help Efrin survive. To aid you in making the right choice, refer to our comprehensive guide.
