Where to find Karlach?

You can find Karlach near the river along The Risen Road in the first chapter of the game, just beyond the Blighted Village. This discovery will initiate the “Hunt the Devil” quest, where you must choose to side with her or a shady Paladin named Anders.

If you decide to protect Karlach and defeat Anders along with his equally untrustworthy companions, you will be able to recruit her later on. However, if you kill a Druid in the grove, you will not be able to recruit Karlach.

Karlach’s attributes, starting equipment, and skills

We weren’t exaggerating when we said that Karlach is a powerhouse. With a burning desire for revenge against those who sold her into slavery, she possesses the stats to back up her anger. Karlach has an infernal engine embedded in her chest, granting her tremendous power that also poses a threat to her life.

  • Strength: 17
  • Dexterity: 13
  • Constitution: 14
  • Intelligence: 11
  • Wisdom: 12
  • Charisma: 8
  • Starting Equipment: Greataxe, Crossbow
  • Skills: Athletics, Perception, Survival, Intimidation

Increasing Karlach’s approval rating

When playing as a Barbarian in the game, it’s important to showcase your strength to strengthen your bond with Karlach. Considering her past as a former slave, freeing other slaves will also earn her sympathy. Defending her, as well as advocating for Tieflings and showing kindness to children, will also raise her approval of you. Following these actions will pave the way for a strong relationship with Karlach, without spoiling the story.

Karlach’s Inspiration Points

Inspiration points are crucial for both your character and your companions, and they can be gained based on your background. These points can be used to reroll ability checks in crucial moments. As an Outlander by background, Karlach grew up in the wilds and acquired survival skills away from civilization.

Romancing Karlach

If you want to develop a more intimate connection with Karlach, you’ll need to help her fix her heart – quite literally. The infernal engine heart inside her runs extremely hot, making physical touch impossible for her. To solve this issue, you must gather infernal iron and visit the blacksmith, Dammon, in Druid’s Grove. He will help cool her down, but it won’t be enough for human contact. The next heart upgrade can be obtained at the Last Light Inn, allowing Karlach to finally hug and express her affection – and potentially more, if you desire.

Optimal Karlach Build

For the best Karlach build, it is suggested to choose Ability Improvement at level 4, providing +1 to strength and +1 to dexterity for higher modifiers. As an alternative, you can embrace Karlach’s ferocity by taking the Great Weapons Master feat, which increases damage by 10 at the cost of a penalty to attack rolls. The versatility of this feat allows you to toggle it during combat according to the situation. Since Karlach primarily utilizes melee weapons, referring to our collection of the best Baldur’s Gate 3 weapons in the game will ensure she is fully equipped for battle.
